What is Information System?

Information System is a set of elements forming an interconnected system of one element with another element to process data into useful information to solve problems and make decisions.

Elements of Information Systems

The information system consists of elements which consist of people, procedures, hardware, software, databases, computer networks, and data communications. All of these elements is a physical component.

1. People
People or personnel in question are computer operators, systems analysts, programmers, data entry personnel, and information systems managers.

2. Procedure
The procedure is a physical element that provides information in the form of a book or instruction manual. There are 3 types of procedures that required, among others, instructions to users, instructions for preparing input, and operating instructions for the computer center employees.

3. Hardware
Hardware for an information system consists of a computer (central processor unit input / output), data preparation equipment, and terminal input / output.

4. Software
The software can be divided into 3 main types
a. General software systems, such as operating systems and data majanajemen system that allows for the operation of computer systems.
b. Common software applications, such as analysts and decision models.
c. Application software consists of programs that are specifically made for each application.

5. Database
Files that contain programs and data evidenced by the physical media such as floppy disk storage, flash, hard drive, and so forth. The file also includes the output of printed and other records on paper, microfilm, and so forth.

6. Computer Networking

Computer network is a collection of computers, printers and other equipment are connected in one unit. Information and data moving through wires or wireless computer network that allows users to exchange documents and data.

7. Data Communications
Data communication is part of telecommunications that are specifically related to the transmission or transfer of data and information between the computers and other devices in digital form that is sent via data communication media. Data communication is a vital part of information systems because these systems provide the infrastructure that enables computers to communicate with one another.

The combination of information technology with business processes will produce the information needed in business, so the purpose of information systems is to create an efficient communication forum in the field of business. Information systems focus on those aspects of technology information and view information technology as a tool for producing, processing, and distribution of information.
